Backyard Issues to Avoid this Summer

Enjoying the summer weather in your backyard is a nice way to spend time with friends and family. Unfortunately, accidents do happen and spoil your summer fun. Here is a shortlist of some common backyard issues to avoid this summer.

Pesticides

Using strong pesticides is sometimes necessary but it is a danger to your family. These chemicals can contaminate the air in the backyard for days and can even rub off on kids and pets. Children are more susceptible than adults to the effect of pesticides because their immune system is weaker. Use caution with pesticides, read the label, and watch out for pesticides around the grill!

Garden Tools

Backyard lawn work, gardening, grilling can leave you exhausted, especially in the heat and humidity and you might forget to gather your tools and secure them. You do not want someone in your family to slip or fall on a tool and get hurt. Make sure to remove backyard tools and put them securely away after you finish using them.

Slippery Grass

Walking on the freshly cut grass feels good and even smells good, but it will not end well if the grass is wet or full of weeds. Slips are common in these conditions. It is why you should always weed your backyard and walk carefully when the grass is wet to reduce the chance of slipping.

Large Umbrella / Canopy Tent

Having a big umbrella or canopy tent in your backyard may not seem dangerous, but it can be blown off balance by the wind, causing havoc in your backyard. Many umbrellas and canopy tents are made of thin metal and will be damaged if the wind blows it over. Avoid injuries and reinforce it with a patio umbrella weight, an umbrella base filled with water or send will hold it in place.

Ticks

Not only is it scary to have an insect stick its head into your skin, but ticks can cause Lyme disease. Check for ticks on your skin regularly, as well as for bull’s eye rashes. To help prevent ticks from hanging out in your backyard, keep the grass and weeds trimmed, and remove wood piles.

Swimming Pool

Heading for a swim? Got your swimsuit and sunscreen? Do not forget pool safety! Besides the danger of drowning (be extremely careful with kids in and around the pool), pay attention to pool electrical safety too. Chemical poisoning is also a risk – make sure to not over treat your pool with chemicals.
