As leading public adjuster firm for the Pennsylvania and New Jersey areas, we’re fully aware of how many steps are to be considered when filing a new property damage insurance claims. Most homeowners, however, don’t have the chance or the time to look into the specifics on how all various intricacies affect the process. That’s why we wanted to give a brief introduction to some of the many things you have to consider when filing a new property damage claim.
Report Detailed Descriptions
You must fully document all details of your property damage loss and fully use detailed descriptions of the damage to your property and items.
Remember to Include All Items
Everything ranging from kitchen appliances and personal photos to landscaping items and pantry or freezer products will add to the amount of the claim. Forget some of them, and you are likely to be underpaid.
Document your Losses
When possible, have as much proof, like photos or videos of the damage, as possible. Receipts for household inventory are also great to have. In general, you can never have too much proof of the damage and its value, so please save and record any relevant information.
Save Receipts and Damaged Items
If possible, save all damaged items as well as any receipts for temporary repairs, including utility bills.
Keep a Log
Make sure you keep a log of all your interactions that have something to do with the claim. This includes written correspondence, phone calls, voicemails, e-mails, and texts.
Hold off on Repairs
Until the claim has been approved by your insurance company, do not begin any repairs or replace anything. Also, please remember you are not obliged to use the insurance company’s contractors.
Consult with a Professional
If you have never filed a claim before, it can be hard to understand the cause and scope of the loss, figure out everything that needs to be reported, understand how thorough the reporting needs to be, hire the right constructors and follow the insurance policy obligations. That’s why we always recommend that you at least consult a professional for more information.
